[edit] Getting Started

What client should I use to connect over SSH?

We recommend using PuTTY, which is a free SSH client.

How come I can't login?

Are you logging into the correct server? The servers nullshells.net/org/com are not valid login servers, even though those domains may work to login for some people, that is not correct. All login servers are premised with a name, e.g. rain, dew, etc... Please keep in mind some services can take up to 15 minutes to fully activate. If you continue to have issues logging in then Contact Us for help. How do I change my password?

You can change your password using the 'passwd' command. It is especially important to do this when your account is first setup.

[edit] Free Accounts

Do free shell accounts come with IRC access?

No. IRC access is disabled on all free shell accounts.

What is account inactivity?

Account inactivity is based on the last time you logged into your shell account. Users should login to shell accounts at least once every 30 days to maintain account activity. Free accounts may be completely removed after 30 days without a login.

How do I get my free account recreated?

Once we remove an account for inactivity a new account request must be made.

[edit] IRC Related

How do I connect to IRC?

To connect to IRC you will need to choose a vhost for your IRC client; IRC access is only enabled on IRC vhosts.

How do I use an IRC vhost?

BitchX support's the /hostname command inside the client. irssi supports the /set hostname command inside the client. You may also use -H (BitchX) or -h (irssi) on the command line to set the hostname.

Do you run oidentd (how to spoof your ident)?

No, we prefer the built-in FreeBSD identd, it allows you to spoof your ident with a ".fakeid" file. These are created in your home directory and allow you to spoof your ident. Type your spoofed ident into the file and save it. If you have psyBNC then it uses an ".ispoof" file. This is in the same format as ".fakeid" so just create a symlink. i.e. "ln -s ~/.fake.id ~/.ispoof"

What IRCnet servers do you have I:Line's on?

Currently rain.ipv6.nullshells.net has an IPv6 I:Line at: linz.irc.at

Do you have an official IRC channel?

Yes, for chat, our official IRC channel is on EFnet in #nullshells.

[edit] Hosting

What are your name servers?

ns1.nullshells.net ns2.nullshells.net ns3.nullshells.net ns4.nullshells.net ns5.nullshells.net

You should use ns1 and ns2, unless your registrar requires more than two name servers.

Do your POP3/IMAP servers support TLS/SSL?
